Steps to Applying for Funding from NBNH
Natural Burial New Hampshire (NBNH) aims to disburse funds fairly and equitably for start-up and ongoing natural burial projects. The following process will be implemented to ensure continuity and accountability.
Step 1: Initial Contact
Applicant contacts an NBNH Board Member to schedule an initial meeting to discuss intent, status, goals, and needs.
Step 2: Application
Applicant completes and submits the online application. The application requires a proposed preliminary budget, immediate and long range (1, 3, and 5-year) plans, plus plans with timeframes for raising matching funds.
Step 3: Determination
Full Board approval is required to release funds. Criteria includes availability of funds[1], and readiness of the applicant to accept and implement released funds. Depending on several factors, including progress, organizational commitment, and demonstrated fundraising capacity, requirements for matching funds or a set amount determined by a sliding scale will be stated. Board to respond to Applicant within 30 days.
Step 4: Written Contract
Memorandum of Understanding will be signed by both parties. A timeline will be established for providing funding and for proof of applicable spending. The applicant will provide all receipts with time and date stamps and be prepared to share any and all financial information as requested.
Step 5: Funds Disbursement
Funds will be disbursed by the NBNH Treasurer according to the MOU agreement schedule once all documentation is received and processed.
Step 6: Accountability
Complete transparency of finances is required at all times. Once the project for which funding has been provided is complete, notification of NBNH is required. Review, site visit, or other means of proving satisfactory use of funds may be initiated by NBNH.
[1] Once application has been received, the NBNH Treasurer will complete a status report to include:

Frequently Asked Questions About Grant Funding with NBNH
What is the process for applying for funds?
Applicants are asked to first contact us for an initial conversation to establish your intent, status, and needs. An NBNH liaison will work with you to help ensure you have everything necessary before applying. Whether land has been acquired, or you are ready to apply for tax-exempt state with the IRS, your application will require a proposed budget, immediate and long range (1, 3, and 5-year) plans, plus plans with timeframes for self-fundraising campaigns.
Who makes the decision about what funds are released?
Your application will be reviewed by the entire Board of Directors. All awards require full consent of the Board. Factored into that decision is availability of funds, along with readiness to accept and implement on your end. Depending on several factors, including progress, organizational commitment, and demonstrated fundraising capacity, we will expect your organization to match the funds or a set amount determined by a sliding scale.
How will funds be disbursed?
You will be asked to enter into an agreement called a Memorandum of Understanding, or MOU. This is essentially a contract that ensures that both parties abide by the expectations set forth in the document. Included in the MOU will be the agreed upon details for funds disbursement that may be in the form of A) reimbursements to your nonprofit, B) advance funding based on your budget, likely in a multi-phased or milestone process, C) NBNH payments directly to your supplier(s), and/or D) other agreed upon terms. Proper documentation and complete transparency of finances will be required.
What is the process for ensuring that the money has been used for the funded purpose?
In the MOU, a timeline will be established for grant funds payment and for providing proof of spending. The applicant will need to provide all receipts with time and date stamps and be prepared to share any and all financial information as requested.
What other support will be provided?
We are available to assist in forming a cohesive, wholistic plan for your project prior to start-up so that you can avoid wasting time and resources. We can help you streamline your process so that you will be ready to receive funding when it is needed.
